Service overview

## Exterior Painting & Decorating: What You Need to Know

### What the service covers
Exterior decorating covers the outside surfaces of a building: masonry and rendered walls, fascias and soffits, window frames and sills, front and back doors, garage doors, gates and railings. Its job is two-fold: to make the property look sharp and to form a protective barrier against rain, frost and sun.

### Who it is for
Homeowners whose paintwork has faded or started to flake, landlords maintaining rental stock, people preparing to sell, and commercial premises where the outside of the building is the first impression customers get.

### When it is needed
Look for flaking or blistering paint, bare timber showing on windows and doors, chalky residue that rubs off on your hand, green algae on render, faded colour on the sunny side of the house, or hairline cracks in masonry paint.

### Why a professional makes the difference
Outdoor painting is less forgiving than indoor. The weather dictates when paint can go on, surfaces must be sound and dry, and work often happens at height. A professional prepares the substrate properly and picks products designed for each surface, so the finish protects your property rather than just covering it.

The cost of waiting

## What Happens If You Leave It

Exterior paint is your building's first defence. Once it fails, the damage is no longer cosmetic.

-
### Rotting timber
When paint breaks down on windows, fascias and doors, water gets into the wood. Left through a winter or two, soft spots and rot can mean joinery repairs or replacement instead of a repaint.

-
### Damp getting into walls
Cracked or failing masonry paint lets rain soak into render and brickwork. Freeze-thaw cycles then widen the cracks and can push moisture through to interior walls.

-
### Algae and staining spread
Green and black growth on render holds moisture against the surface and gets harder to remove the longer it is left.

-
### Kerb appeal drops
A tired frontage knocks value off in the eyes of buyers and makes a business look closed or neglected.

### Common mistakes we see

- Painting in damp or cold weather, so the paint never cures properly and fails early.
- Painting over flaking paint instead of scraping back to a sound surface.
- Using interior or general-purpose paint outside.
- Ignoring algae and dirt, so new masonry paint does not bond to the wall.
- Working off an unsafe ladder rather than proper access equipment.

Our process

## Five Steps From Quote to Finished Job

- 01
### Free survey and quote
We walk round the property, check the condition of every surface, note any repairs and give you a clear, no-obligation price.

- 02
### Cleaning and preparation
Loose and flaking paint is scraped back, surfaces are cleaned and treated for algae, cracks are filled, and bare timber is sanded and primed.

- 03
### Protection
Paths, plants, windows and neighbouring surfaces are covered and masked before any paint goes on.

- 04
### Painting in the right conditions
We apply exterior-grade products in suitable weather, allowing proper drying between coats for a durable finish.

- 05
### Walk-round and guarantee
We inspect the work with you, clear everything away and cover the job with our 1-year guarantee.

## Exterior Painting & Decorating: Our Work

In detail

## Exterior Painting & Decorating: Materials, Methods & Situations

The outside of a building is made of very different materials, and each one needs the right preparation and product.

### Masonry and render
Rendered and pebble-dashed walls are cleaned, treated for algae and repaired where cracked, then finished with a breathable exterior masonry paint. Breathability matters: it lets moisture escape from the wall rather than trapping it behind the paint.

### Fascias, soffits and bargeboards
Painted timber at roof level takes the worst of the weather. It is scraped and sanded back, knots and bare patches are primed, and it is finished in a flexible exterior paint that moves with the wood as it expands and contracts.

### Windows, sills and doors
Timber windows and doors are sanded, filled where needed and finished in exterior satin or gloss. A well-painted front door is one of the quickest ways to transform how a house looks from the road.

### Metal gates, railings and garage doors
Metalwork is wire-brushed to remove rust and loose paint, spot-primed with a suitable metal primer and finished to slow corrosion.

### Timing and the British weather
Most exterior paints need dry weather and temperatures above a minimum to cure. We plan exterior jobs around the forecast and use our 7-day availability to make the most of dry spells.

### Homes versus commercial buildings
For homes, we focus on protection and kerb appeal. For commercial premises, we also plan around trading hours and keep entrances clear and safe for staff and customers throughout.

Local to you

## Exterior Painting & Decorating Across Basingstoke & Beyond

We are based in Basingstoke and carry out exterior painting & decorating for homes and businesses across Hampshire, Surrey, Berkshire and Wiltshire. Being local means we can visit to quote quickly, plan work around the weather and your diary, and keep the job moving without long gaps between visits.

From terraced houses and new-build estates to period properties, offices and commercial units, the properties in this part of the South vary a lot. Older homes often need more preparation and filling, while newer homes tend to need careful work on fresh plaster and modern materials. We assess each job on its own terms and tell you plainly what it needs before we start.

Because we work 7 days a week, from 7am to 9pm, it is easier to book work in at a time that suits you, including evenings and weekends when you are at home, or outside trading hours for businesses.

Who does the work

## A Family-Run Business

Centurion Decorating is run by Paul Mead, who was trained in the trade by his dad and has now been decorating for 24 years. Both of Paul's sons work alongside him full-time.

That matters when you are letting someone into your home or business. We take care over preparation and finish, and if you have a question you can ask Paul directly.

Every job is fully insured with £5 million public liability cover and comes with a 1-year guarantee as standard. Quotes are always free, with no obligation, so the only thing it costs you to find out is a phone call to 07717 774411. You can also see everything we do on our homepage or send us the details of your job.

FAQ

## Exterior Painting & Decorating Questions

### How much does exterior painting cost?
+It depends on the size of the property, access, the surfaces involved and how much preparation is needed. We give a free, no-obligation quote after looking at the property.

### What time of year is best for exterior painting?
+Late spring to early autumn usually gives the most reliable dry weather, but work can be done whenever conditions are suitable. We plan around the forecast.

### How long does exterior paint last?
+It depends on exposure and the surface, but properly prepared exterior paintwork typically lasts several years. South-facing walls and timber fade and weather fastest.

### Do I need to be home while you work?
+Not usually for exterior work, as long as we have access. We will agree arrangements with you when we quote.

### Is the quote for exterior painting free?
+Yes. Every quote is free and there is no obligation to go ahead. You get a clear price before any work starts, so you can decide in your own time.

### Are you insured?
+Yes. Centurion Decorating carries £5 million public liability insurance, so your home, furniture and property are protected while we work.

### Is the work guaranteed?
+Every job comes with a 1-year guarantee as standard. If something we did is not right, we come back and put it right.

### Can you work evenings or weekends?
+Yes. We work 7 days a week, from 7am to 9pm, so we can fit around work, school runs or business opening hours. Call 07717 774411 and we will find a slot that suits you.
